On December 31, the last day of 2014, our chapter gathered our members together to welcome the New Year and 20 members joined in it. At 1:00pm, all the members had arrived the XUEZELU subway station. Under the conduct of Yajuan Chen and Ting Chen, they are divided into four groups to be charge separately of hot pot, snacks, home cooking and barbecue. After one and half hours, the four groups took their food to house that our chapter rent. Once our members arrived the house, they started to play all kinds of games, including Mahjong, Chinese chess, game machines, foosball table, billiards and so on. (picture 1) Happy time always flows quickly and it was time for us to prepare dinner. The groups did what they had been assigned. About one hour later, the dinner was OK and all the members sit together to enjoy the delicious food and chat. (picture 2) After the dinner and finishing the cleaning, the activity was close to the end. we took out the birthday cake to celebrate the 3th year of our chapter. At the same time, thanking Shengping Liu for his cooking and Rulei Xiao for his barbecue, we awarded them with a beautiful gift——chocolate. (picture 3)

Invited by Nanjing University Student Chapter of the Optical Society (OSA-NJU) and granted by OSA, National Tsinghua University professor Pan Xiling visited Nanjing University in September 16th. Before his report, prof. was shown the beautiful campus and the Nanjing National Laboratory of Microstructures (picture 1 and 2) accompanied by our members and our advisor prof. Lu. During the visit, prof. Pan also communicated with our members and made useful suggestions on future development of our chapter. At 10:30 am, the report began and at the beginning, our advisor prof. Lu gave a brief introduction of prof, Pan, following our president Dunzhao Wei sending a souvenir to Prof. Pan. Then Prof. Pan began his report with a short introduction of OSA and encouraged the participants to join the OSA family. His report named “Liquid Crystal THz Photonics: an Overview” appealed to most listeners in case that he explained profound theories in simple language on the basic properties of terahertz wave and THz sources, terahertz detectors, and the basic properties of the liquid crystal, which included many works he had done (picture 3). Finally, He introduced the application prospect of liquid crystal as a terahertz wave plate. After the report, the teacher and the students also asked some academic problems and Professor Pan gave a perfect answer. Finally, prof. Pan, prof. Lu and some of the members took a photo as a souvenir (picture 4). Prof. Pan’s report made good influence on the participants as well as our members. The participants had a whole picture of the Liquid Crystal THz Photonics by listening his report. for those doing other research, they got a basic knowledge of liquid crystal and THz wave, while for those in that field, they knew the latest advances in Liquid Crystal THz Photonics. For our chapter, we got more recognition and popularity from the students of Nanjing University and Southeast University because the participants included students from Southeast University. Besides, our chapter had made a big step forward in case that it was the first time for invited a lecturer through the OSA’s program “hosting a traveling lecturer”. What’s more, it gave us much experience for us to host an IONS if our application approved. Thank you for OSA grant and prof. Pan’s visit.
On May 27, 2014, eight members of our chapter visited Thorlabs laboratory in Shanghai, China to learn the basic information and operation of the optical instruments. When we got there, we received a warm reception of Thorlabs engineer Shuai He, who gave us a detailed introduction of various products and services. In the morning, the engineer described the origins, development and distribution situation of Thorlabs in the world, but more specifically described some of optoelectronic devices associated with our research, including polarizing optical components, optical isolators, coherent light source, etc.. In the afternoon, the engineer demonstrated to us some specific operations of optical instruments. Apart from the common optical application like high-precision XY motorized stage, power meter and detectors, Shuai He also showed us optical system, for example, the beam quality analysis system and imaging system. After the visit, we learnt more about optical instruments, which will benefit our science research and experiment.
